Alarming Rates of Sexual Harassment and Assault Reported in NYC Subway System
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer released a report on July 26 that shows that many women are sexually harassed and sexually assaulted while in the New York City subway system.
Of nearly 1,800 respondents, 63% stated that they have been sexually harassed; 10% have been sexually assaulted. It also shows that vast majority of these incidents going unreported (96% of those who were harassed and 96% those who have witnessed harassment did not report the incident to authorities or MTA personnel). According to the study, most cases of sexual harassment and assault occur during the rush hour periods of 5:30am-9:30am and 4:30pm-7:30pm.
The study lays out several recommendations on how the MTA and NYPD can effectively address and combat these issues that so many women (and some men) have to deal with on a regular basis. Click here for the press release and here for the report (PDF).
Kudos to Borough President Stringer and his staff for addressing this crucial topic!
