The following publications and organizations are accepting submissions and applications for upcoming issues and projects:

Chica Luna is accepting applications for their F-Word Project. The F-Word Project is a “multimedia justice project for young women of color 18 years of age and over. The F-Word is a program whose objective is to build the next cadre of socially conscious media makers by recruiting a number of young women of color of diverse racial, sexual, economic and linguistic identities, throughout the five boroughs to cultivate their perspectives as media activists. For 18 months participants take part in weekly workshops on media literacy, filmmaking, organizing & advocacy skills and self-healing.” The last day to apply is May 15th!

Feminism for Freaks – is a new anthology project, and there is a Call for Papers. The requested information is as follows: “Academic, non-fiction and creative work will be considered–the call is broad, and we’re willing to accommodate new and interesting work by freaks of all kinds. Please submit abstracts of up to 250 words and a short bio by May 31st to estrangedcognition[AT]hotmail[DOT]com and suzanmanuel[AT]gmail[DOT]com.”

Hermana Resist has extended their submissions deadline until May 15th. They also have ad space available. Hermana Resist is described as a “personal, political zine with literary tendencies which manifest in forms of poetry, free verse, haiku, short stories, journal entries, rants, raves, critiques, commentaries, photos, recipes and dreamy manifestos.”

SisterSong is coming out with a Reproductive Justice Anthology! SisterSong seeks to address and accomplish the following: “The struggle for Reproductive Justice and the well-being for women of color, young women, LGBTQQI individuals, women of the diaspora, poor women, and women with a range of abilities is a multi-varied issue/engagement.We would like to address the multiplicity and the polyvocality of this struggle by bringing together works from across our movements produced by women and individuals working in communities as well as at the academic level in order to birth this anthology. All contributions are sincerely welcomed and would greatly add to the understanding of the complexity faced by communities and as individuals.” The deadline for submissions is June 1st!

Update, Another Project:
Think Girl is starting a new project called “I Was There, Stories from the Feminist Front.” Think Girl is looking for “women of all ages, races and backgrounds to submit stories of their work as activists for women’s issues. (Think: A Radical Chicken Soup for the Feminist Soul.) These first person stories of strength, perseverance and courage will serve as inspiration to women and girls as they continue their work in or enter the movement.” Stories will be published weekly at their website and they are looking to collect and publish the stories as well.

Right-wing nut in question: Phyllis Schlafly

Why she is a right-wing nut: she is an anti-feminist…anti-everyone, except of course, if they are: white, Christian, conservative and of the upper class. She is perhaps the most vocal opponent of the Equal Rights Amendment, both the 1970s version and the one that is currently on the Senate and House floor. She is founder of the Eagle Forum, an anti-choice, anti-United Nations, anti-international law, anti-gay, anti-vaccination, anti-…well, you get the idea.

Blogger Evil Bender got a hold of her latest bullshit commentary titled “Advice to College Students: Don’t Major in English.” As Evil Bender shows, she should have gotten an editor to check her work before submission. Quite a fun read!

Jessica over at Feministing.com is already writing up a second book (awesome!), this time looking at and analyzing double standards. If you have a vagina, then you know all too well how that process works (Man A can do this and it will be fine, but if Woman A does it, then she’s a *insert derogatory term here*). And not to say that men don’t face it as well (example, a woman can order a cosmopolitan, but if a man does, he must be gay). But, let face it, women are swimming in it, since the day they pop out of their mother. I know I have.

Jessica has asked Feministing readers what are the weirdest, most infuriating, or silliest double standards that they have encountered or heard. And I asked myself, “Jeebus, where the hell do I even begin???” So, here’s what I posted over at the post:

I think the weirdest childhood one I’ve heard was from my dad when I was about ten or so. I was whistling and he told me to stop, that girls shouldn’t whistle; that it’s not “ladylike.” Yeahhh, I sure wouldn’t want to look like his pervy old friends who whistle at every damn thing that moves.[/sarcasm]

A friend, who when he speaks, every other word out of his mouth is either sh*t, or a variation of fuck, had the nerve to tell me, that oh “it’s nasty when a girl curses” and that I need to fuckin’ stop.

The virgin/whore dichotomy is applied in this scenario: “sit with your legs closed/crossed, what you want people to think of you” (even though I’m wearing pants?!). Yet, these fuckers on the train occupy three seats because “well, they’re men, they need to let their boys breathe.” Yeahhh, they are just that BIG…my ass.

And my mother last week, in regards to the deteriorating tiles in the bathroom: “it’s a shame that neither you (my father) nor your son (who’s only 19 and never fixed a damn thing in the house, well in his life), the men of the house can’t fix the tiles.” Me: “umm, why can’t you fix it, or why don’t you ask me to fix it?” Mom: “that isn’t our job to do, women don’t do that.” …A few minutes later, after a short heated debate…Me: “you do realize that women work in carpentry and house remodeling, etc, right?” Mom: “well, they took a course for that.” Because apparently, male carpenters/plumbers/etc, never, ever had to acquire some sort of instruction. It’s just natural. (Mind you, I’m the one who has fixed/assembled 90% of the things in the house. The missing 10% accounts for the bathroom, including the crappy tile work)

I’m an amateur weightlifter. The general philosophy at the gym is “no pain, no gain.” As most of us know, pain is not pretty. I’ve had a few people comment on how I never smile, that I look too aggressive/angry when I lift. Ohhhhh yeahhh, try crackin’ a smile when you’re squatting with 175lbs on your back, running out of breath and your heartrate goes over 170 beats a minute. Yeah, try to crack a Colgate smile, dipsh*t.

Oh, and apparently sarcasm isn’t too desirable in a woman either.
